Enjoy fresh beach in Depok Beach. When you go to Bantul, south of Yogyakarta, you will see many places to visit. One of them is Depok Beach. It is reported the beach is the only one the local government seriously manages to be a center of culinary resort. There stand many traditional stalls that sell fresh fish not far from the seashore. Some of the stalls are faced south, so that the visitors can enjoy the fascinating tidal waves view while eating fish.
Fishermen has begun catching fish since 10 years ago. It is told around 1997 some fishermen coming from Cilacap (a special territory of Central Java) found a landing site in Depok. Those men with , a huge catch at hand, attracted people of Depok. And this encouraged them to follow their step, that is, becoming fishermen.
Some people, then, grew to be ‘TEKONG’ (local term for fish catcher). They went catching fish on their motor boat. Fish catching is done throughout the year except on such sacred days as ‘Selasa Kliwon’ and Jumat Kliwon’. The number of their catch is reasonable generally in other months than June to September.
A place for bidding fish is erected called Mina Bahari 45. Fishermen from other areas can also sell their catch here.
As the visitors to this beach grow in number, many traditional restaurants are open for sea food. The buildings are very traditional in character. People sit on the mats with small tables. They look simple, but they are clean and comfortable.

Various kinds of seafood are available. The cheapest ones, Cakalang, cost only $1 (counting to 5 to 6 fish). The ones bigger in size like (red and white Kakap) range from$ 2 to $3 per kilo. And the largest one called ‘Bawal’ ranges form$ 3 to $ 6. The fish are either fried or baked. You can’t miss crabs, squids, and sea shrimps.
Having been satisfied with seafood, you can go out of the beach to head for Parangtritis and Parangkusumo beaches located not far from the site. There another object can be viewed. It is a high dune. This dune is special for there is only one in South Asia. Dune is very rarely found in tropical area.
It is said that the dunes in Depok area were formed dating back to thousands of years ago by uniquely and naturally happened process. There used to be some types such as Barchan Dune, Comb Dune, Parabolic Dune, and Longitudinal Dune. Today only Barchan and Longitudinal Dunes are left.
When you are there, you will only be charged for only $ 0,5 for entrance to the beach, and $ 0,75 for parking your car.
