How smoking harms your health ; Smoking destroys your lungs
Smoking destroys the natural system of cleaning and repair of your lungs and traps the chemicals that cause cancer.
Smoking destroys small hairs (cilia) that cover the upper airways and protect against infection. Normally, a thin layer of mucus and thousands of these cilia lining the inside of your airways. The mucus traps small bits of dust and pollution that you breathe, and the cilia move like a wave to push the contaminated mucus out of your lungs. That’s when you cough, swallow or cough up the mucus and that you clean your lungs.
When the natural system of cleaning and repair of your lungs is damaged, germs, dust and chemicals in cigarette smoke stay in your lungs. You become so risk of developing a chronic cough, an infection of the breast, lung cancer and COPD.
Smoking permanently damages the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs, making breathing laborious.
The alveoli, tiny air sacs at the end of the lungs, are designed as very small elastic ball. When you inhale, the cells help your body absorb oxygen and when you exhale to get rid of carbon dioxide. (Carbon dioxide is a harmful gas that is also found in emissions from cars.) Smoking damages your lungs so that the alveoli lose their elasticity. Your lungs are therefore more difficult to absorb oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide. When cells are damaged at this point, you may experience breathlessness and fatigue. Your heart must work harder to circulate oxygen which your body needs. Over time, this damage can lead to COPD and heart disease.
Signs of damage to the lungs due to smoking
